WEIGH DOWN: HOW DOES IT FEEL TO RISE ABOVE OVEREATING?

This is how it feels to fly above the food: you could not pay me to overeat. I have absolutely no desire to eat beyond full. In fact, it is almost nauseating to think about overeating. This is the case with other areas in life. Consider stealing, a behavior that arises from worldly greed. Could I pay you right now to go to the mall, steal something from the department store, and bring it back to me? Most people say, with disgust, "No." They are flying above the worldly pull of stealing.

You are going to fly above the pull of food and feel the same way. You will find yourself experiencing strange things. The attraction of food is lessened. You seem to be floating when you can leave food on your plate. The magnetic pull is less when you can actually look up from the food and forget it temporarily. You start realizing that someone else has his face in the food. And, after you finish the meal, you might notice that, for the first time, you did not mind serving others the best and the biggest steak. You did not mind sharing your meal with your children! Halfway through a candy bar, you find you actually can let it go. Amazing! You can wrap it up and put it away. You may not find it in your purse until next week, because you forgot about it. That is flying!

What is happening to you? You have conquered gravity by having the same mindset as Jesus Christ. That is just one of the keys Christ gave us. Look at the rest of this scripture in Romans 8:9-14:

You, however, are controlled not by the sinful nature but by the Spirit, if the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Christ. But if Christ is in you, your body is dead because of sin, yet your spirit is alive because of righteousness. And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit, who lives in you.

Therefore, brothers, we have an obligation —but it is not to the sinful nature, to live according to it. For if you live according to the sinful nature, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live, because those who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God.

The Spirit of Christ is not just some vapor or mist. The Spirit of God and Christ that is referred to has deep meaning, and part of that is reflected in the individual's "mindset." In other words, you need to have the same focus as Christ. What was the mindset of Christ? To please the Father and to do His will. That attitude, although just a part of the makeup of the "Spirit of Christ" that is talked about in this passage, is still a part. If that is the case, then you are talking about the power that raised Christ Jesus from the dead. This power will give life to our mortal bodies!

The sun, being much larger than the earth, has a much stronger gravitational pull. We are not conscious of it because we are so close to the earth and so far from the sun. However, if a spaceship were to be launched out of earth's orbit, it would begin moving toward the sun's gravitational pull. The farther it traveled, the less earth's gravity would affect it and the greater the sun's attraction would become.

We want you to pull away from the world and turn your path toward God. As your spaceship draws nearer to God, you will discover that He will draw near to you; He and His ways will become increasingly attractive to you. You will become unable to resist His will because His powerful, magnetic, wonderful force is much, much stronger than the world's pull. You should never want to go back to the world. You will feel like you are floating above the world's lure.

Now, when you mess up and you find that the gravity of sin has pulled your face back down into your plate, or into the refrigerator, or has made you drive your car to the fast food restaurant when you are not hungry, then you need to refocus. Get down on your knees and pray. Ask God to refocus your mind. Just push your restart button; you have one, and you do not have to wait until Monday morning to push it and wait for your next hunger.

Start now. People who wait may never do it. I know about those people who say they are going to start over tomorrow. That means, "I don't want to do it." Why would you start over tomorrow if you wanted to do it? Start right now whether you feel like it or not.

Just as sad thoughts brought Peter Pan back down to the ground, preoccupation with your lusts (food, fat grams, exercise, menus, new diets, and planning a binge) will pull you down. Did you fall down? If you did, you focused on your own desires, which are the opposite of God's, while you were being tested.

Do not be deceived; God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. The one who sows to please his sinful nature, from that nature, will reap destruction; the one who sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life.
